On February 8, 2013, I was a highly anxious and burned-out fifty-two-year-old physician. That night, as I left my clinic in my usual chronic state of anxiety, I wondered if life was worth living. But I had to be onstage as a stand-up comedian an hour later, so killing myself would have to wait. However, I never got to the comedy club. I suffered an injury that night that would end my medical career.

I’ve dealt with anxiety since I was a teenager. My father was schizophrenic and bipolar, and the chaos and pain of his illness created tremendous alarm in my system. My mother did her best to love and take care of my brother and me, but she had her own issue with chronic anxiety. I often say my mother was neurotic and my father was psychotic, so my psyche didn’t stand much of a chance!

I wrote this book to make my father’s eventual suicide and the suffering of my family mean something: to help others like me who experienced chronic worry to understand and fix the pain that was sucking the life out of their lives. I have degrees and advanced training in medicine, neuroscience, and developmental psychology, but much of what I’ll share with you came out of my experiences in very unscientific places. This book is unique in its blend of hard neuroscience and soft spirit.

For over thirty years, I searched for relief from anxiety and saw over fifty practitioners ranging from Indian shamanic energy healers to highly accomplished psychiatrists. About the Author

Dr. Russell Kennedy (born Snaffy McWeaselnuts), and also known as “The Anxiety MD,” is a medical doctor, anxiety expert, corporate speaker, yoga and meditation teacher, husband, father, grandfather, and hypochondriac.

To become “The Anxiety MD,” Dr. Russ has earned university degrees in medicine and neuroscience, and he has had over 100,000 patient encounters in his medical career. In addition, he believes the vast majority of mental dis-ease starts in childhood, and to that end, he has taken master’s level training in developmental psychology at the Neufeld Institute in Vancouver

Russ’s own anxiety started as he was growing up in a chaotic and confusing household with a father who suffered from schizophrenia and bipolar illness. Once he became an adult, healing from his own anxiety took him on a long and frustrating road with plenty of dead ends. As a doctor, Russ had full access to the best methods and medications “modern” traditional psychology and psychiatry had to offer for many years, but traditional methods only provided limited relief. Desperate to find a solution, he forged an unconventional path, and many of his breakthroughs came from pursuing distinctly non-traditional, atypical, and counterintuitive sources.

He has often said he is driven by a need to help others in a way he could not help his father. He has also often said he does not want people to have to suffer as he did, and strives to make his father’s painful life and death to mean something by helping other families heal from emotional illness. It’s not all serious though, as for many years he was doctor by day, comedian by night, performing in comedy clubs across the country.

A physician who is a stand-up comedian is unusual, but Russ freely admits to being atypical for a doctor. He studied meditation and intention while living at a temple in India, became a certified yoga and meditation teacher, practiced Holotropic Breathwork®, and has taken psychedelic (plant) medicines to see and experience as much of his mind as he possibly could. While under a therapeutic dose of LSD he discovered what his “anxiety” truly was and used that knowledge to develop a theory that would allow him to ultimately heal himself.
